Episode #220: Agenting with Rebecca Sherman!

Episode #220: Agenting with Rebecca Sherman!

Welcome back and happy fall! Grace and Alvina welcome special guest literary agent Rebecca Sherman of Writers House, and they talk about everything agenting entails, including how Grace and Rebecca started working together.

Chinese Menu is now available! You can purchase a signed copy at High Five Books (Grace’s local indie book store) and from the Carle Museum!

Welcome Rebecca!

Grace likes to say that Alvina and Rebecca are the women behind her whole career. Rebecca is a Senior Literary Agent at Writers House and has worked there since 2001 and has been working with Alvina and Grace since 2006! The first book that she worked on with them was Year of the Rat! Rebecca has also worked with Grace’s friend and author, Jarrett Krosoczka.

“How have you been?”

Rebecca has bene busy this week with celebrating Yom Kippur and also she had four books come out this week! Alvina didn’t end up running the half-marathon because she was still sick. Stephen and Alvina were able to spend time with their niece and nephew. Grace has been basking in the glow that Chinese Menu made the NY Times Best Seller list. Grace is writing a novel and working on the stock signing book tour with Debbie Michiko Florence.

Publishing Process!

Rebeccas shares how she got started in publishing which began with writing obituaries! Her entry is very different from junior staff now. It was not that competitive back then and it was more “on the job” training. There were less people who did it.

Rebecca talks about how to get new clients, her book club, and the early stages of meeting Grace and Alvina.

Fortune Cookie Segment: What book would you like to see turned into a Broadway show?

Rebecca: Mexikid by Pedro Martin

Alvina: The Mona Lisa Vanishes: A Legendary Painter, a Shocking Heist, and the Birth of a Global Celebrity by Nicholas Day and illustrated by Brett Helquist

Gratefuls!

Grace is so grateful for her long career with Rebecca and Alvina. Alvina is so grateful for being close with her niece and nephews. Rebecca is grateful for a friend’s birthday and being able to meet new people and celebrate each other.
