Episode #190: Aging with Libby Koponen!

Grace and Alvina welcome special guest Libby Koponen to discuss everything about getting older.

Girl Scout Cookies!

Help Grace’s daughter, Hazel, reach her Girl Scout Cookie sales goal! Purchase cookies here!

Libby is one of the Blue Rose Girls from back in Alvina’s blogging days. She is the author of Blow Out the Moon. Libby is 72-years old and she and Alvina have been friends for more than 20 years. Libby spends half the year in her shepherd's hut on a Scottish island.

How have you been?

Grace has been so busy and focused selling Girl Scout Cookies for her daughter Hazel. There is a cookie shortage! Libby has been thrilled to be learning how to navigate NYC on her own. Alvina was busy celebrating Stephen’s birthday. They went to see the movie Cocaine Bear and did Karaoke at night! Erica Turner had an event in New York.

Aging:

Libby starts with a question: “What do the two of you fear about getting older?”

Alvina: losing her memory. Grace: not being able to keep up with Hazel “and that she’ll have to take care of me.”

Libby talks about fearing less as she gets older.

Alvina asks: “What is something you wish you had known about aging when you were younger?” Libby wishes she “had known what a difference how much money you have makes to your quality of life when you’re older.”

Grace asks, “Why do you think you’re happy in your old age?” “I’m very grateful for everything that I have and never take it for granted.”

Libby talks about the danger of becoming older and having people not listen to them or pay attention to them. In our American Culture, there is a huge fear of getting older. In other cultures, older people are respected and cared for.

Gratefuls:

Grateful that Simoas are back in stock! Grace is grateful for her nephew coming out to Saratoga to help with the selling of the cookies. The kids are going to be alright! Libby is grateful that she has made so many terrible mistakes in her life but it has all turned out alright. Alvina is grateful that Little Brown was able to give good raises and bonus’s this year.
